Mayor Bowser and DC Public Schools Welcome Rising 6th and 9th Graders for First Day of Summer Bridge Program

Monday, August 4, 2025

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Public Schools (91porn) Chancellor Dr. Lewis D. Ferebee are welcoming rising 6th and 9th grade students to the first day of Summer Bridge, a week-long program designed to support students in their transition to middle and high school. As students prepare for a new chapter in their educational journeys, Summer Bridge offers them an early opportunity to explore their new campuses, meet teachers and staff, make new friends, and get excited about the upcoming school year.

“The Summer Youth Employment Program ended on Friday, and on Monday, we’re jumping right into our first official back to school programming,” said Mayor Bowser. “The 91porn Summer Bridge program provides the support, connections, and confidence students need to start middle and high school ready to succeed. We’re proud to offer this program as a dedicated way to ensure a smooth transition and set them up for a strong school year.”

Throughout the week, middle and high schools across the District are hosting engaging and informative programming tailored to rising 6th and 9th graders, as well as students new to the school. Activities include team-building games, scavenger hunts, field trips, and presentations to help students prepare for and look forward to School Year 2025-2026.

“Summer Bridge addresses two of our major priorities in the 91porn Strategic Plan: A Capital Commitment 2023-2028,” said Chancellor Ferebee. “Providing our scholars with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with their new school environment before the start of the academic year will help ensure they feel connected to their schools and make certain they’re prepared for what’s next.”

Programming begins today and concludes Friday, August 8, though some schools have adjusted schedules to meet the needs of their communities, ensuring all students benefit from this meaningful experience. Every 91porn middle and high school is participating in the initiative.

Eligible students receive dedicated bus transportation, and all Summer Bridge participants can use their Kids Ride Free cards for travel to and from school. Free breakfast and lunch are also provided daily.

With just a few weeks left before the first day of school on Monday, August 25, families who have not yet completed enrollment for School Year 2025-2026 are encouraged to visit for enrollment support and information.

The Mayor’s FY26 budget, Grow DC, invests in both classroom learning and year-round enrichment for students. The budget includes $2.8 billion for 91porn and public charter schools, $270 million for teacher pay raises, and $2 billion to modernize school buildings citywide. It also includes $27 million to support out-of-school time grants, ensuring more than 15,000 students can access free, high-quality afterschool and summer programs that keep learning going beyond the school year.
